18 Aug 2013 : Elvis Marathon at Ol' Skool pub, PJ

Fresh from my live show in Genting the night before, I was the opening act for the bi-annual Elvis Marathon event at Ol' Skool pub in Petaling Jaya. The event commenced from 3 PM, all the way until 3 AM the next day.

Promo article featured in The Star prior to the event

Backing me as the live band was none other than The Strangers, headed by drummer boy and my buddy, Jesse. The crowd started to build up at 2 PM and was soon at full house capacity. The other good news was that the local press reporters were present to witness my act, followed by multiple interview sessions.

I was utterly thankful to the owner of Ol' Skool, Calvin for organizing such an amazing event. During the event, Calvin informed me that 1 of the key performers didn't show up and was uncontactable for days. I felt sorry for Calvin, and thought that the least I could do was to fill up a short session before I leave.
And so I sang 2 more songs, 'Doing the best I can' and 'If I can dream', much to the delight of the Elvis fans present.

Just when I thought that it was the end of another wonderful event. It led to another sensational event. News of our Elvis Marathon caught the attention of a local TV network. We were cordially invited for an exclusive interview at the NTV7 Breakfast Show - an experience that rarely comes around....

Special article featured in 'The Standard' newspaper in Hong Kong: 7 June 2013

Special article featured in Guang Ming Daily : 6 Oct 2011

Following my performance at the Elvis event at Ol' Skool pub in August 2011, I was invited for a personal interview by Chau Yueh Shyang, the renowned professional reporter from Guang Ming Daily.

Chau is a friendly & down-to-earth person, and made me feel very comfortable during the interview, which seemed more like a casual chat with a long lost friend.

Among topics covered were how I became an Elvis Tribute Artiste; and people who inspired & supported me to realize my dream.

I also shared about my wedding day which falls on 1 May (some years back), which was coincidentally the actual wedding day of Elvis & Priscilla in 1967. I chose the day because I would get a day off for my anniversary, not knowing about its related significance until I became an Elvis Tribute Artiste a year into my marriage.

Another special incident occurred at the birth of my second son, Brandel. At the operation theater, the doctor had a CD of evergreen songs on the player. Right at the moment of delivery, along came the song "It's now or never",on the dot precisely.... My wife & I looked at each other and smiled with a 'hidden connection' - that song was the opening song for my performances back then. Hmm....another Elvis in the making...?

For the photo session after the interview, I took out my Elvis props - framed giant poster, postcards & memorabilia items I bought from Graceland, Elvis vinyl records, T-shirts, my prized Elvis trophy etc.

It was a great experience for me, and a truly enjoyable meeting with Chau. A big thanks to Chau, for the impressive article with center-page glamour pic.

The Star 18 July 2001 - Winner for Boyz II Men singing competition

Here is an old article I've been keeping all these years. Back in 2001, I participated in the Boyz II Men singing competition organized by Universal Music & MIX FM, held at Red Box in Low Yat Plaza. This was one of the competitions I won during my early years of singing. I was the champion, sweeping the grand prize of RM2,000 cash & a holiday for 2 at Club Med Ria Bintan, Indonesia.

....“I sing along to the CD player and the Top 40s, and Elvis’ numbers are a favourite choice. Of late, I’ve been hearing a lot of my own voice too,” said Wong, who has just cut his first Cantonese album, Yat Foh Chan Chee Sam, with New Southern Records.
While Wong admits to having a lukewarm interest for cars, he does have his eyes set on a Honda CRV for a weekend car and maybe a new version of the Honda City sometime in the future.
For now, he is content with the iron horse in his driveway.
"It suits my needs as a family man," said Wong...

Opening act for Elvis Marathon at Ol' Skool pub - 16 Aug 2009

Elvis is "alive" in Malaysia…through 18 Impersonators
By Teodora S. Cotrău

There was an awesome Elvis marathon on 16 Aug 2009 at Ol' Skool pub, Jalan Gasing.
I was the opening act, backed by 'The Strangers'. This is the best band in KL that plays instrumental hits by 'The Shadows'. Instead of the usual jumpsuit outfit, I wore an Elvis 60's gold jacket and performed hits like 'Hound Dog', 'Devil In Disguise', 'Can't Help Falling In Love'.

Excerpt from article :
"...And it’s amazing how during the show, I discover his belief on all impersonators’ lips. “He is God’s miracle. I think when you serve God as worship leader as I do, I believe that I’m tithing my talent…” opines Alex Wong, 33 years old, one of the participants. His faith drew him to success. On 2002, he won the First Prize to Graceland at Elvis Impersonators Competition organized across Malaysia. “I remember like it was yesterday, the day when I call the radio station who organized the show at that time to register myself. But before doing this, I prayed. I just wanted to give a try. God’s response was such an amazing surprise. Despite the amount of impersonators willing to take part into the competition, I was the first one on the line and eventually the first on stage”…added Alex. "
