"..... A new generation of Elvises
What’s interesting about the impersonator phenomenon is that while, naturally, many grew up in Elvis’s time and became passionate then, a new generation of tribute artists is up-and-coming, some people who weren’t even born when Elvis was alive, and yet exhibit total fanaticism. One of the best of the new Elvis impersonators is certainly Alex Wong, a man who’s won various contests and shows being Elvis.
“My dad played Elvis in the house and I guess, I just heard it when I was a baby. Before I knew it, I could imitate it really well. And now,” he says from the dressing room of the Funtheque Club (one of the main venues for tribute acts, as fans chant ‘we want Elvis! we want Elvis!’) “I find that I can entertain people by being Elvis andthat’s great, it’s very satisfying. I’m actually kind of a shy person in some ways but when I’m Elvis, and with the crowd cheering me on, it’s just amazing, really great.” ......"
