Artbug meeting with an ardent fan from Penang : 16 Sep 2010

A blog entry of my performance in Dec 2009 at the Hard Rock Hotel Penang ensued with a heart-warming comment by a spectator at the event.

Ching said "In FedEx Rockin' Purple Christmas, my husband and I were captivated by your amazing performance and your 'magnetic' Elvis voice, we absolutely enjoyed every moment of your performance. I've recorded part of your performance and showed it to my father, and he was shocked! He is a 100% Elvis fan and he wants a chance to enjoy your performance too! Please update us if you have any upcoming performances in Penang!"

It was a real encouragement, an affirmative sign that I'm doing it right :)

I further traced the origin of Ching, which led me to her website. Ching is none other that a renowned artist of international recognition with marvelous works of texture art. She runs Artbug, a Frame & Art shop in Penang, together with her husband, Khoo, a famous frame specialist. What a perfect partnership indeed!

I had the privilege to meet up with Ching and her husband at their shop in Penang, while I was on holiday with my family. Both were cheerful, pleasant & heart-warming. We felt very much at ease in a cosy atmosphere in our face-to-face personal encounter.

I truly admire the art gallery on display ... simply amazing. Do drop by Ching's shop when you are in Penang.

Artbug is at 26 Nagore Road, Georgetown, 10050 Penang, Malaysia.

With Ching & Khoo, the owners of Artbug

As a gesture of appreciation, I presented Ching with my personal Elvis CD featuring my rendition of popular Elvis evergreen hits. To my surprise, Ching presented me with a texture art of the character 舞. It means "Dance" which associates with the performing arts of my Elvis choreography.

Our souvenir exchange

Painted meticulously in acrylic paint and coated in gold, the word literally stands out in texture, complemented by a simple and matching frame cut design. What an honour to receive such a meaningful & artistic gift. It's now placed together with my singing trophies won over the years.

To Ching & Khoo, thank you so much for a brief but wonderful time in your warm & cosy company.
Hope you enjoy listening to my CD. Wishing you happiness always and good prosperity in your business.

Are you ASEAN's Best Impersonator?

In June 2010, Red AMP (RedTix), an entertainment division of AirAsia, organized a lookalike contest in Facebook - "Are you ASEAN's Best Impersonator?"

Submitted entries came from various countries, and the winners are chosen by a panel of judges after being shortlisted as the top entries with highest online votes. Well, I submitted an entry - me as Elvis posing with a Harley.

Recently, I received a message from RedTix... I'VE WON THE FIRST PRIZE!!! It's a RM500 travel voucher for Air Asia flights. Awesome.
What's more, it's a real cool title, adding on to my accomplishments to date.

"Are you ASEAN's Best Impersonator?" Yes I am :)
To all who voted for me, thank you ... thank you very much.

My rendition of Toong Hua (Guang Liang) 童话 (光良)

Here's my rendition of a popular Mandarin song entitled Fairy Tale(童话).

My rendition of Smile, popularized by Nat King Cole

Apart from being specialized in Elvis impersonation, my singing hobby includes songs from other artistes.

Here's my rendition of a meaningful song from Nat King Cole, entitled 'Smile'.

11 June 2010 : Dumpling Festival at Doha, Qatar

While I have achieved my dream of becoming a recording artiste with the release of my debut Cantonese album last year, my biggest dream is to be a gospel singer who travels around the world.
Nothing would be more satisfying that to use my talent for the glory of God, building treasures in heaven & impacting lives by doing what I do best & love most - singing; while visiting places around the world, marvelling at the wonder of God's creation.

In June 2010, I had a glimpse of doing just that with the opportunity to sing at the other side of the world - Middle East. I had the honour of being the guest entertainer at Dumpling Festival held at Doha Fellowship, Qatar. This was an evangelistic meeting attended mainly by Asians, along with several visitors from Europe.

The delectable food at the festival.

The crowd at the main hall.

Deacon Ai May sharing the message

My performance started with 'Hound Dog', which never fails to capture the crowd's attention with a big bang. During 'Can't Help Falling In Love', the crowd sang along to the last line of this familiar tune.

It then reached the highlight of my performance, with an inspiring message of hope from Jesus.
I sang the gospel song that earned Elvis Presley a grammy award for best gospel album - "He Touched Me". Check out the touching lyrics :

Shackled by a heavy burden
'Neath the load of guilt & shame
Then the hand of Jesus touched me
And now I am no longer the same

For He touched me
Oh He touched me
And oh what a joy that floods my soul
Something happened and now I know
He touched me & made me whole

Since I met this blessed saviour
And since he cleansed & made me whole
Oh I will never cease to praise Him
I'll shout it while eternity rolls

For He touched me
Oh He touched me
And oh what a joy that floods my soul
Something happened and now I know
He touched me & made me whole

Some playful Elvis poses

Posing with Deacon Daniel Yong

It was a great evening of fellowship and great food. With much appreciation to Deacon Daniel Yong for inviting me to sing, and to George Wong for the wonderful photos.

AXA Affin Life Awards Presentation in Genting Highlands - 1 Apr 2010

"And the oscar goes to..."
The Oscars came to Genting Highlands, Malaysia on 1 April 2010, and no, it's not an April Fool's joke. The Oscar Nite was the theme for AXA Affin Life Annual Awards Presentation 2010, held at the Grand Ballroom of the Genting International Convention Centre.

The Oscar-welcome at the entrance, ushering the guests into the grand ballroom.

As the sole entertainer for the big event, I got the crowd rockin' & rollin' with 'Hound Dog', accompanied by the trademark Elvis choreography.

The Elvis tip-toe move, likened to the modern day MJ pose :)

Accompanied with dancers for 'Burning Love', which got the crowd groovin' at the dance floor.

Re-appearing in the variety segment, rendering evergreen numbers in English, Malay & Cantonese, much to the delight of the crowd.

The packed ballroom, with guests dressed to the teeth.

My snapshot moment with Y.B. Datuk Lawrence Chan, the notable award-winning training consultant, along with his guests.
It was a memorable event for me, especially towards the end of my performance where the crowd was waving and singing along to my rendition of 'pung yau' (friend). My sincere appreciation to the emcee, David, for the capturing the excellent on-stage photos.

SPDP Charity Dinner in Miri - 27 Mar 2010

The Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) held a charity dinner in Imperial Hotel, Miri on 27 March 2010. This event was hosted by Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry, Y.B. Dato' Jacob Sagan and Chairlady, Datin Winnie Sagan. The posh ballroom was well decorated and had a full house attendance, close to 1000 pax. The main VVIP addressing the key note for the event was none other than Y.B. Datuk Sri William Mawan, president of SPDP, who is also an ardent Elvis fan himself.

Getting ready in the guest room.

Posing with the entourage of local tribal group at the entrance.

Y.B Datuk Jacob Sagan with guests.

Opening ceremony on stage with a traditional tribal song.

My first segment started with 'Sway', followed by other evergreen favourites.

The VVIP table in the packed ballroom.

A special presentation by the local tribal group.

My second segment with my usual signature Elvis hits.

I've always thought that East Malaysia has a wide Elvis fanbase, as majority of the population is English-speaking. I was right indeed...the multi-racial audience of rich diversed ethnicity cheered aloud to my songs.

The evening ended with another guest artiste from Kuala Lumpur - Betty Banafe of Spa Q TV series fame. She rendered a few songs, including an Arabic number, much to the delight of the crowd.

Me with Y.B. Datuk Sri Willaim Mawan.

Photo session with numerous tables after my Elvis segment.

A beautiful duet with the lovely Betty Banafe - "Unforgettable".

The closing ceremony on stage with the committee members and VIPs, marking the end of the successful charity dinner.

With controversial fashion designer of exquisite taste, Aaron Von Jolly.

With the talented recording artiste from Kuching, Shal Sagan.

With the emcee for the evening, a local DJ with RTM Sarawak.

All smiles with Datin Winnie & Y.B Datuk Jacob Sagan.

A big thank you to Datin Winnie for engaging me again this year as the main entertainer. My wife, Natalie, & I enjoyed our stay in Miri. I look forward to more performances in the future.
